Prepare For Snow Storm Coming To Mid-Michigan

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Mid-Michigan is expecting a strong storm to come through Saturday and last until Sunday.

Having the right items in your house and car can help to prepare for the worst case weather scenario.

Brian Wheeler with Consumers Energy said, "We expect a lot of ice and a lot of snow. Either of those, alone or together, can make for a bad combination. Ice can certainly cause a lot of outages throughout our system throughout Michigan and if that happens, we certainly hope our customers are ready to deal with power outages potentially."

Having a home that's prepared for the storm is a very important first step. Keep phones and other electronics charged and have plenty of food and water on hand for several days.

"We have employees throughout the state who are going to be on call or who are ready or expecting to work Saturday on their days off to respond to the storm," said Wheeler.

Having a generator on hand can help in case you do lose power this weekend. Some local hardwares are already reporting they're out of some of their larger models. Managers urge people to be proactive about being prepared for a storm and buying things like ice melters and scrapers early instead of hours beforehand.

If you're traveling at all this weekend, make sure your car is equipped, just in case, too. Things to keep in the trunk include kitty litter--if you get stuck in the snow, you can use it under your tires to get some traction. Maps, blankets and a first aid kit are all essentials, especially in the winter.

If you experience outages and are a Consumers customer, you can go to www.consumersenergy.com/outage to report it.
