Hundreds Line Up For Mobile Food Pantry

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- No one should go hungry, especially during the holidays.

Thanks to food from the Greater Lansing Food Bank, Saturday dozens of volunteers for Lansing's mobile food pantry handed out food to those in need. Workers hoped to feed 650 families, which includes people like Terry Thomas.

"Food stamps just don't carry you all the way and sometimes your money doesn't carry you all the way," she said. Thomas has four children at home and says she's grateful the pantry helps put food on the table. "It's worth it every single time, to come out to this pantry to get food that helps you and your family out every month," she said.

From watermelon to potatoes and turkey, volunteers handed out about 40,000 pounds of food to those in need. Volunteers say every month the need continues to grow.

"In October we had what we considered a record crowd, November was more and today, as we're looking, it might be another record," said Dr. Joan Jackson Johnson, the City of Lansing's Human Relations & Community Services Director.

The food gets handed out on a first come, first served basis, which leads to people lining up hours before it opens.

"Some were here, like one 1 o'clock in the morning, some people earlier than that," Jackson Johnson said.

This month, many families have extra mouths to feed because their kids aren't in school.

"The hope, at this point, is that we're going to provide a little more today than we normally would because...for two weeks [children] won't receive the two meals a day at school," Jackson Johnson said.

The holiday giving provides meals for many this season and they hope the generous Christmas spirit stays in people's hearts year-round.
