Shiawassee County Declares "State of Emergency"

SHIAWASSEE, Mich. (WLNS) -- Officials in Shiawassee County have declared a "state of emergency" there, triggered by the weekend ice storms.

As of 5 p.m. on Sunday, Consumers Energy estimates that 17,342 customers are without power in Shiawassee County. That's slightly more than half of all the customers in the county."

As part of the emergency, they're asking people to stay off the roads, both for their own safety and so that road crews can treat iced up roads.

That is just a request - as comments on the Shiawassee County Emergency Management & Homeland Security Facebook page suggest, the county is not under martial law.

Officials there are also asking people to submit pictures and locations of damage to their page and to let them know about anyone who might need shelter.

They're asking people who need shelter and transportation to call 211. They're asking people to call 911 only in emergencies or if they see a downed power line that's over the road or that immediately threatens someone's life or property.
