Bike Commuters Brave Winter Roads In Houghton Area

Posted: Updated:

HOUGHTON, Mich. (AP) - Neither snow nor sleet is keeping some hardcore Houghton-Hancock area bicyclists from pedaling to work.

Michigan Tech physics instructor Kris Bunker tells The Daily Mining Gazette of Houghton that this is his fourth winter riding daily from Hancock to the campus, which is in one of the state's snowiest locations.

Bunker says he uses a ski helmet when he rides "because it's a little warmer" than a normal bicycle helmet.

He and other bicyclists in the area recommend wearing warm, breathable layers of clothing. The outer layer should be reflective because it's often dark during commutes this time of year. As for the bicycle itself, they say fenders and a rear-view mirror are important.
