Woman Who Left Mom's Body At Store Faces Sentence

Posted: Updated:

PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) - An Oregon woman who left her mother's body behind a thrift store near Port Huron is returning to court for her sentence for manslaughter.

Kelly Rhodes had been charged with murder but last month pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. Authorities believe neglect had a role in the death of 89-year-old Mary Grenia of Salem, Ore., last March.

Grenia died inside a truck at a truck stop after she and Rhodes were turned away from entering Canada on the Blue Water Bridge. An autopsy revealed heart and lung disease but no sign of trauma.

The 49-year-old Rhodes is scheduled to get her sentence Monday in St. Clair County court. Her attorney has said Rhodes and Grenia were trying to relocate to Canada with a truckload of possessions.
