Outage Advice For Those Without Power

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – If your home is a victim of one of the hundreds of thousands of power outages caused by the ice storm, the Michigan Public Service Commission has some helpful advice.

What to do when power is lost

  • Fuse or breaker box – check to see if the outage is due to a blown fuse, talk to neighbors
  • Call – talk to your local electric company, tell them about the power outage and let them know if there is emergency medical equipment in the home
  • Lights – Unplug lights and appliances to prevent electrical overload when power is restored, but leave a few lights on
  • Refrigerator – keep the refrigerator door closed as much as possible, move milk, cheese and meat to the freezer, group packages together to keep them colder, cover the refrigerator and freezer with blankets
  • Downed power lines – avoid downed power lines and immediately report any to your electric company and/or police

Additional steps to take when out of power and outside temperature is cold

  • Water – leave faucets on so there is a constant drip, this avoids pipes freezing
  • Clothes – wear multiple layers and a hat
  • Fireplace – fireplaces can be used for light and heat, but be sure the damper is open for proper ventilation
  • Candles - remember to blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed, keep them at least a foot away from anything that can burn
  • Food – store perishable food outside in a cold and shaded area or in an unheated garage
