Grand Rapids West Catholic Team Builds Hand

Posted: Updated:

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - A 4-year-old girl from Cedar Springs has received a new prosthetic hand thanks to members of the Grand Rapids West Catholic robotics team.

WOOD-TV reports that Harmony Taylor has a limb disorder and was born without a right hand. She outgrew her first prosthetic hand, and her family could not afford a replacement. The first prosthetic cost $5,000.

Harmony's mother, Melanie Peterman, says insurance would not cover a replacement so that is when members of the Grand Rapids West Catholic robotics team stepped in and built her one. She received the robotic hand last week, just in time for Christmas.

Harmony will test the hand before the robotics team makes any needed adjustments.
