MSU Senior Linebacker Suspended For Rose Bowl

Posted: Updated:

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Michigan State University senior linebacker and team captain Max Bullough has been suspended for the Rose Bowl.

MSU's Head Coach Mark Dantonio says the Traverse City native violated team rules.

Losing Bullough before the game is a blow as he is one of the physical and spiritual leaders of the team. The star player is in his third season as Michigan State's starting middle linebacker with 76 tackles this year. Bullough has 299 career tackles and had made 40 consecutive starts. He is a two-time team captain and was named first-team All-Big Ten by the coaches for the second-straight year.

Coach Dantonio released a statement around midnight Thursday confirming the end of Bullough's Spartan career.

"Max Bullough has been suspended for the remainder of the season for a violation of team rules. It is extremely disappointing for all parties involved. We will stay focused and close ranks as we prepare for Stanford on January 1 in the Rose Bowl. Max will forever remain a Spartan and valued member in this team's achievements.

"We will have no further comment on this issue."

The team arrived in Pasadena, Calif. early Thursday, but Bullough did not make the trip.

Bullough comes from a long line of Spartan football players. His grandfather, Hank Bullough played on the team in the early 1950s and his father Shane followed in the mid-1980s. Two of Bullough's uncles were Spartans and his younger brother Riley is a redshirt freshman.

The No. 4 Spartans will play No. 5 Stanford in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. It is Michigan State's first appearance in the game in 26 seasons.

The Rose Bowl would have been Bullough's final career game.

The curiosity is high as to who will play as the starting middle linebacker. A news conference will take place from Disneyland later Thursday.
