Outages Continue, Families Spend Christmas In the Dark

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Thousands of other families in Mid-Michigan were forced to spend Christmas Day in the dark. Utility workers have been working around the clock to restore power after an ice storm left families cold and frustrated on Sunday.

The utility crews are prioritizing the repair of downed power lines based on public health, safety and circuits with the highest number of customers without power.

Thousands of homes without power have been restored, but there are still more than 90,000 homes without power in the state.

As of 4:30p.m. Thursday, the Board of Water and Light is reporting 3,000 customers are still without power, down from 4,400 earlier in the day. BWL says they will continue restoration Thursday.

Consumers Energy is reporting a total of around 54,000 across the state still without power. Locally, those numbers break down as follows:

Barry (6,977)
Calhoun (822)
Clinton (3,710)
Eaton (4,051)
Genesee (20,721)
Ingham (4,220)
Ionia (1,903)
Livingston (2,456)
Oakland (1,554)
Shiawassee (7,368)

Currently, the estimated power restoration schedule for the hardest hit areas is:

Thursday:  Kalamazoo County, western Kent County and greater Grand Rapids
Friday: Barry, Calhoun and Shiawassee counties
Saturday: Some portions of Clinton, Eaton, Genesee, Ingham, Livingston, Oakland and Ottawa counties.

Utility companies are asking residents to put their safety first during this time and stay away from any downed power lines.
