Storm Damage; What's Covered Under Your Insurance

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - While power may slowly be coming back on, you might be wondering what's covered under your home owners policy.

"The first thing you want to do is to make a claim," Michigan Insurance Institute of Michigan Lori Conarton said. "If a tree comes down, hits your house, your garage, your shed, there is generally coverage for that."

Conarton says most policies cover up to $1,000 dollars, but if those trees land in your yard, they are your responsibility unless you have what's called "debris coverage."

"It's a big mess, it really is," Lansing Resident Cari Sullivan said, who fortunately learned she's covered.

"Because it's ice, it's covered, there's not going to be a major problem other than my deductible, it will be covered," Sullivan said.

She's spent the last five days with family and friends after she lost power Sunday when the storm ripped her power box directly off her house. "I have family in Ferndale, so I was down for Christmas anyway."

It's a good thing, had she gone to a hotel and asked for a reimbursement she'd be out of luck.

"Generally, if you're leaving because you don't have any heat, you don't have any power, then those are not charges that would be covered," Conarton said.

And Conarton says unless you have a special endorsement for your food, food spoilage isn't covered either.

"You just have to grin and bare it and deal with it and let them do their job," Sullivan said.

But Conarton says learn from this storm and ask your insurance agent about your coverage plan, so should this happen again, you'll know what's covered and what mess is your responsibility.
