Jan. 3 Hearing For 3 Men In Killing Of 71-Year-Old

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - A judge has scheduled a Jan. 3 probable-cause hearing for three young men charged in the robbery-slaying of a 71-year-old man at a senior living complex in Ann Arbor.

Nineteen-year-old Mark Paling of Melvindale, 20-year-old Rikky Ranger of Melvindale and 19-year-old Richard Thompson of Flat Rock appeared in court Thursday, and their preliminary examination was postponed at the request of the lawyers representing them.

The three are accused of killing David E. Maurer, whose body was found Dec. 1 at Lurie Terrace senior housing.

Authorities say the defendants killed Maurer Nov. 23, stealing a computer, money, drugs, credit cards, cellphone and firearm.

The men are charged with open counts of murder, meaning a jury could consider either first- or second-degree murder.
