Monroe Church Buys, Renovates Roller Skating Rink

MONROE, Mich. (AP) - Members of a Monroe church have transformed a one-time roller skating rink into their place of worship.

The Monroe Evening News reports that Crosswalk Community Church that the 200-member congregation used a bank loan to buy five acres that included the 25,000-square-foot Great Lakes Skateway for $350,000. The rink has been vacant for about three years.

Church volunteers spent the past three months cleaning and remodeling the building to move into this Christmas. The Rev. Dale Hayford says the first worship service will be Sunday.

The congregation started in a barn in 2008. It has rented two worship sites for about $3,300 a month. Hayford says the mortgage payment on their new center is less than that.
