State Unemployment Benefits Set To Expire Saturday

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Anxiety grows as tens of thousands of Michiganders will lose their federally-funded unemployment benefits Saturday.

"It's very frustrating. It's like you're about to hit rock bottom," said Quander Abercrombie. "It's stressful. Because you're trying to figure out how you're gonna live day-to-day, how you're gonna pay your bills, pay your rent and eat."

Starting Saturday, more than 43,000 people in the state will be cut off from federal unemployment benefits, money job-seekers can get after they've used up state benefits.

Congress had a chance to extend the program before recess, but that window of opportunity is now closed.

"I wish sometimes the government can be in a person's shoes like mine to see how it feels. We put them there, and they're not looking out for the person that put them there," said Abercrombie.

She said that's frustrating, but not enough to make her lose hope. "I have faith, and that's what gets me through."

Michigan's Unemployment Insurance Agency is partnering with Michigan Works to help people find work and get back on their feet.
