Spartan Fans Grab Gear Days Before Rose Bowl

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- We're just days away from one of the most anticipated football games in decades -- the Rose Bowl.

Many Spartan fans are packing bookstores across East Lansing, grabbing gear before it's too late.

"I'm just getting some new Rose Bowl gear to rep the Spartans," said MSU fan Stephen Lunde.

Store managers say they ordered a ton of Rose Bowl gear, and it's tough to keep up with the demand.

"We've just stayed busy. My guess is that we'll be busy right through New Year's Eve, we're open until 4:30 p.m., I guess we'll have people right up until that point," said Mike Wylie, the assistant manager at the Student Book Store. "Obviously this isn't Christmas shopping. This is Rose Bowl shopping."

On top of the traditional Spartan tees, many stores stocked up on jerseys, mugs, flags and footballs embellished with Rose Bowl logos.

"It's great. 100th Rose Bowl. It's going to be a sweet, sweet experience," Lunde said.

At the Spartan Bookstore, Rose Bowl gear is selling out fast. From hoodies to hats and lanyards, they have it all covered, whether you're celebrating from home or heading to Pasadena for the big game.

"You know, I thought about it in '88 and made the mistake of not going, so I'm just thrilled to be going this time," said MSU alumnus Bob Reinhart.

Fans, like Reinhart, are making sure they have enough Spartan gear to sport out west because big business at these bookstores means big Spartan support at the Rose Bowl.

Since items are flying off shelves, many stores say they plan to stay open with longer hours and will have more staff on hand this upcoming week.
