New Year Brings News Laws

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - The new year is right around the corner and starting Wednesday, January 1, a variety of new laws will take effect across the country.

In Colorado, pot stores will open their doors in the first state to legalize the use of recreational marijuana. Illionois will become the 20th state to legalize marijuana. Both of these laws will hold up against federal drug rules.

In Connecticut, a law passed in response to the Newtown shooting says guns that are considered "assault weapons" must be registered with authorities or they will be considered contraband.

A law in California dealing with transgender students says beginning Jan. 1, they'll be allowed to choose which resthroom they want to use and which sports team they would like to play for - male or female.
