BWL Customers Line-Up At Walk-In Centers

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) -- Many people in East Lansing are outraged over the outages. Monday, those who still don't have power, headed to one of BWL's three walk-in centers.

"We're supposed to be able to have electricity and it's supposed to be reliable. How's it reliable when I've relied on the generator for nine days and where have they been? No where," said Emily Tice, a resident who hasn't had power for nine days.

After more than a week, hundreds of people still don't have power, but what do have -- are questions for the BWL.

"We called and the automated system said we were on the list, but then when they came out with the list of streets, we were not on it," said Kaeshona Austern, a resident without power.

City workers say they're supporting BWL and East Lansing residents in any way they can. Monday they handed out flyers to people while they waited in line and say they've put together outreach teams for people still in the dark.

"There's been a systemic failure of communication from the Board of Water and Light with the public and we've done what we can to try to direct that in instances, like these walk-ins. But I think there's a lot to learn and a number of tough questions when everyone's safe and their power's back on," said East Lansing Mayor Nathan Triplett.

Monday afternoon, the utility company's general manager, J. Peter Lark, announced power would be back by the New Year.

"By the end of tomorrow our entire system will be up and running," Lark said.

While customers remain hopeful, their confidence is wearing thin.

"I feel that we're a forgotten neighborhood," Tice said.

Customers appreciate the information and face-to-face communication, but what they really want, after nine days, is their power restored.

BWL plans to reopen the walk-in centers Tuesday morning at 8:30.
