Posted: Updated:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - A giant hockey puck lit with thousands of lights and a big cherry are among the things dropping on New Year's Eve in Michigan.

The midnight puck drop is planned for downtown Ann Arbor ahead of the NHL's Winter Classic. It's part of a family-friendly event Tuesday night called "The Puck Drops Here," which includes live music, food and drinks.

The Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs will play the Winter Classic on Wednesday at Michigan Stadium, the home of University of Michigan football.

In addition to the new Ann Arbor event, the annual "CherryT Ball Drop" is planned in downtown Traverse City featuring a large, illuminated cherry. A Detroit-themed ball drop is planned in the Motor City. And a ball drop is planned in downtown Grand Rapids.
