27,000 Spartan Fans Attend Record-Breaking Pep Rally In L.A.

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES – More than 27,000 Michigan State University fans packed into a plaza outside the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles for a pre-Rose Bowl pep rally on Tuesday, breaking a school record. According to MSU Alumni Association Executive Director Scott Westerman, Tuesday's crowd is the largest ever for a school pep rally.

"As an alumni guy, I couldn't be happier," said Westerman. "These are my people. I've been floating through them all day, and it's just like being a pastor being with his flock. I love it."

MSU fans were entertained at the beginning of the pep rally by cheerleaders, the dance team and the Spartan Marching Band. The football team was not present, but Coach Mark Dantonio made a brief appearance before the crowd, underscoring the significance of this year's Rose Bowl for himself, his team, the university and fans. "When we started this year, we started with a dream," said Dantonio. "The dream has come true for all of our players and all of you."

Former MSU quarterback and current NFL player Kirk Cousins also made an appearance at the event. Cousins will be the honorary captain for Michigan State at Wednesday's Rose Bowl Game. "I'm just very grateful for this opportunity to be here, and I'm just trying to soak it all up and enjoy it," said Cousins.

Other well-known faces in the crowd included former Michigan State football coach George Perles, who led MSU to its last Rose Bowl title in 1988. Players from the 1988 Rose Bowl championship team were also on hand.
