PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A judge has ordered competency examinations for three men charged in the robbery and slaying of a 71-year-old man at a senior living complex in Ann Arbor.

Nineteen-year-old Mark Paling of Melvindale, 20-year-old Rikky Ranger of Melvindale and 19-year-old Richard Thompson of Flat Rock appeared Friday for a probable-cause hearing in Pittsfield Township District Court.

But the defendants' lawyers requested competency exams.

The Ann Arbor News says Judge Cedric Simpson agreed, and the hearing was adjourned.

The three are accused of killing David Maurer, whose body was found Dec. 1 at Lurie Terrace senior housing.

Authorities say Paling, Ranger and Thompson killed Maurer and stole money, drugs, credit cards and other items. The men face open murder and robbery charges.

Their next court appearance is scheduled for March 13.
