MSP Gives Driving Tips In Winter Weather

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Winter weather in Michigan means snow and slick roads. As it continues for the next few months, officials are reminding drivers of safety tips while on the road.

Trooper Robert Schwalm's been teaching at the Michigan State Police's precision driving track since 2005, so he knows a thing or two about how to handle a car in all types of weather.

"The thing that people want to do immediately when they start to skid is go to the brake and that's the worst thing you can do," said. Trp. Schwalm.

So what do you do if you feel the wheel start to slip?

"Get off the gas, get off the break, so basically plant your feet on the floor, use hand over hand steering movements. You have to look where you want to go," said. Trp. Schwalm.

One way to help reduce the chance of an accident is to simply slow down. For every 10mph, you should be at least two car lengths away from the vehicle in front of you.

"You don't want to be involved in an accident even if it's not your fault, because if you would've been going a little slower, you could've moved to avoid that person or stop before hitting them," he said.
