Essential Ways Winterize Your Car During Cold Weather

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - With the winter weather dropping to dangerous temperatures it's important to be prepared for emergencies both at home and on the road.

As the winter weather continues, cars are more likely to get stuck in the snow or slide off of the roads. Being prepared for any kind of snow emergency is extremely helpful in making sure you are not sitting in the cold waiting for hours before help arrives.

"Watch for snow build up around your tires and your fender and clear those regularly. Going to a car wash will take care of that. Second thing a good set of wiper blades. And make sure you have winter grade washer salt so that you can have clear vision," said Greg Days, the owner of Bill & Charlie's Automotive Repair.

Some key things to have in your car for the winter include:

  • Ice scraper - to clean off your windows
  • Kitty litter - for traction
  • Snow shovel - to clear snow out of the way
  • A flashlight - to make sure you can see at all times
  • Boots, blankets, gloves and a hat - to stay warm
  • A flare and hazard/reflector vest - to make sure people can see you on the road
  • A First Aid kit - in case of injury
  • Windshield wiper fluid - to make sure you can see
  • Food, such as beef jerky and granola bars - essential to store in your car, if you are stranded, you will need food to survive
  • Water - to stay hydrated and for the car's radiator in an emergency
  • Batteries - for the flashlight
  • Car phone charger - to make sure you can make phone calls
  • Map - in case your cell phone does not work and your GPS is out of satellite range
  • Spare tire - in case of a flat tire

By adding these items to your car safety kit, you can be sure you are prepared for emergencies during the cold winter months.
