Republican Land Favors Extending Jobless Benefits

Posted: Updated:

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Republican U.S. Senate candidate Terri Lynn Land has come out in favor of extending unemployment benefits for 43,000 Michigan residents.

Land on Tuesday issued a statement saying she support an extension of jobless benefits to "those actively seeking gainful employment." She adds that it's just a short-term fix and another example of how Washington is governed by crisis.

The Senate is preparing for a showdown vote Tuesday on whether to restore between 14 weeks and 47 weeks of benefits averaging $256 weekly to 1.3 million long-term jobless who were affected when the program expired Dec. 28.

Democratic candidate Gary Peters also supports extending jobless benefits. Land's stance puts her at odds with some Republicans and outside conservative organizations that say an extension of benefits is wasteful.
