Heating Tips That Can Save You Money

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Replacing a furnace can be a quick repair if you know what to look for, but if you wait, it could be too late.

"We could hear the boiler running, but it was not getting warm," said Carol Creed. She knew something wasn't right when her kitchen was a different temperature than her living room. So she called Comfort Heating and Cooling.

Dan Feher says the first thing you want to do if you lose heat is check the outside furnace vent. Once that's clear, check the furnace and boiler. If you have one, check to see if any pipes are leaking or filters are dirty.

"Thermostat is set at 70 and it's only 66," said Creed.

Feher says Carol's boiler was only burning at 33 percent because there wasn't enough air coming in through the outside vent.

"Now that I've removed the ice from the outside vent, it's ramping up," said Feher. He says you also want to make sure your vents are free and clear of debris, furniture and animals.

"Nobody thinks of servicing anything. If it works, it works. Where they really need to think about it and do the proper maintenance on it every year," said Feher.
