Prevent Frozen Pipes With These Safety Tips

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - One of the biggest issues Michiganders face right now is frozen pipes.

As pipes are freezing, the burst is spraying gallons of water all throughout the home.

In these more severe weather conditions you may have to do a little more than insulate your pipes with foam.

So what can you do to make sure your pipes don't freeze and burst? There are several simple steps you can take to protect your pipes. If the pipes are outside the wall, open cabinet doors, such as underneath sinks. It's also a good idea to turn the heat up just a little more in the house.

If you're in a situation where the pipes are prone to freezing, let the water run for a while and keep it running overnight so that the pipes do not freeze.

Plumbing professionals also warn you to never use an open flame, electric heater or blow dryer to thaw out the pipes because this method can cause an electrocution hazzard.
