House GOP Adds Tax Cut, Road Funding To Agenda

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Republicans who control the Michigan House are adding a tax cut and additional road maintenance funding to their agenda.

Other new items for 2014 include shielding gun owners' privacy from public-information requests and continuing to approve anti-human trafficking bills.

House Speaker Jase Bolger and House Republicans unveiled their updated "action plan" to reporters at a Thursday news conference in the Capitol.

Bolger isn't committing to specific tax relief yet, but a state income tax cut falls within his parameters. He rules out Democrats' calls to reinstate an income tax exemption for pensioners and to fully restore a tax credit for low-income earners.

Bolger says he doesn't expect to raise taxes as a permanent road upkeep solution but says legislators could dedicate some surplus budget funds to roads like last year.
