Storm Causes Decrease In Blood, Platelet Donations

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - The snow storm that came through almost a week ago stopped most non-essential travel for people in mid-Michigan. Now, the Red Cross is reporting blood and platelet donations are down.

Around 280 blood drives in 25 states were canceled due to snow and the extremely cold temperatures. They say this resulted in a shortfall of around 8,400 blood and platelet donations since January 2.

People with O positive and negative, A negative and B negative are most in demand. However, they're still encouraging everyone to reach out.

They're urgently encouraging anyone who is able to donate, to call the Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767 or visit www.redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment.
