Homeless Give Back To Their Community

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - There are still several crews and homeowners trying to dig out of their homes and driveways following last weekend's heavy snowfall.

"I've been on the streets for over 20 years," said Michael Johns. During that time, that Michael Johns struggled with addiction.

"I was actually out one night walking the streets and Mike Karl and his Homeless Angels were out walking and said you know what, it's time for you to come off the streets," Johns said.

So for the last two weeks, thanks to the Homeless Angels, Karl and donations, Michael Johns has been living in a hotel. "Being able to try and get my life together again it was wonderful."

But instead of staying warm in his hotel, Michael Johns along with Karl and the Homeless Angels is helping shovel sidewalks and alley's in Lansing.

"You know, I've got a warm place to sleep, but you know what, other people don't have that advantage," Johns said.

It may be a simple gesture to pay it forward, but one the group feels they have to do.

"Somebody needs to go to doctor's appointments. They need to go to their family members. We need to take care of our neighbors, our brothers and sisters, because these people took care of us and this is what we need to do," Mike Karl said.

It's a rewarding feeling for Michael Johns, one he says he couldn't pass up. "I've been out of the streets so long and I've had so many people helping me and just taking advantage of it, here I feel I can give back," Johns said.

"And if I can go out there, put myself to support, that that will show them that there still is hope out there," Johns said.

Mike Karl and the Homeless Angels are currently raising money to fund a 24-hour warming center. They hope to raise $30,000, so far they've collected about $5,000.
