75,000 Michigan Residents Choose Health Insurance

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - About 75,000 Michigan residents chose a health insurance plan from a government website during the first three months of enrollment under the federal health care law.

Numbers released Monday by the Obama administration show that roughly 10 times more people in Michigan enrolled in private plans on the website in December than in the prior two months.

It's unclear how many of the 75,000 residents have followed through and paid their first monthly premium for coverage effective Jan. 1. Enrollment continues until the end of March.

84 percent of those picking a plan qualify for tax credits to offset a portion of their monthly premiums.

Through December, Michigan's marketplace received 136,000 applications covering about 212,000 people. Of 185,000 residents deemed eligible to enroll, 75,000 did so as of Dec. 28.
