Consumers Energy Warns Of Phone Scam

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Consumers Energy is warning customers to be on the look out for a phone scam.

The company says people pretending to be from Consumers are calling to demand customers pay their bills over the phone.

Since November 22 Consumers says there have been almost 120 reported cases of phone fraud. The scam usually begins with the caller demanding payment of an energy bill within an hour, then telling the customer to buy a prepaid green dot card to make the payment over the phone.

Consumers says it never asks for payments over the phone with green dot cards and if you believe you are a victim of the scam call the consumers hotline at: 1-800-477-5050.
