Final BWL Forum Gets Heated

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – At the final Lansing Board of Water and Light community ice storm response forum, customers expressed a lot of anger and frustration toward the utility, and in some cases, toward each other.

The meeting started with an apology from BWL CEO Peter Lark, and like other meetings, followed with outraged customers sharing their stories of suffering days without power. At one point during the meeting, customers started taking their frustration out on each other, interrupting speeches and using obscenities to convey their emotion.

In addition to general customers, a former BWL commissioner gave public comment, and called for Lark's resignation. "I've never seen anything like this happen under any CEO's leadership, and in this instance, I think it's time for Peter to step down," said former commissioner Joseph Graves.

Graves also said he sees a conflict in interest in the leadership of the community review team conducting the external investigation of BWL's response to the ice storm. Brigadier General Michael McDaniel will be leading the task force, and is friends with Lark from their time working together at the Attorney General's office. "I think that anytime you've got a situation where the person that is subject of the investigation has spent years working with the person that's conducting the investigation, you have to question the results of that review," said Graves.

TJ Bucholz, a spokesman for Gen. McDaniel, said the panel for the external investigation has been selected, and those members will be announced to the public on Monday. Bucholz said the external review will be completed by mid-March. A separate, internal investigation of BWL's response to the storm will be completed by mid-February.
