MLK Commission Accepts Generous Donation, MLK Day Events Begin

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Everyone is welcome to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., MLK Day is Monday, Jan. 20.

There are plenty of events happening throughout the weekend to honor him.

The first celebration kicked off around 11 a.m. when the Greater Lansing Area Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission was presented with thousands of dollars at a special check presentation.

More than $27,000 was presented to the MLK Commission, all thanks to the Great Lakes Capital Fund, AT&T Michigan, and the MSU Federal Credit Union.

This donation will be used to provide scholarships for graduating seniors and will also help the commission host essay contests for middle school students.

"We really find value in the program as it unites community. It brings together students to talk about their dreams and how it ties to the dream of Martin Luther King and how they're going to incorporate those values in their everyday life," said April Clobes COO, MSU Federal Credit Union.

The commission will hold their 29th annual MLK holiday luncheon on Monday at the Lansing Center.

The honoring of MLK's legacy will continue Friday night at the Wharton Center with 'Music of the Dream.'

Gospel superstars Tye Tribbett, Kim Burrell and Brian Hurst along with the MSU Gospel Choir will take the stage at 7 p.m. Friday night.

Events will also continue throughout the weekend, starting Saturday at MSU with a key note speaker and workshops on social injustice and the importance of diversity.
