TMSG: MSU Museum Prepares For Special MLK Day Showcase

Posted: Updated:

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Martin Luther King Junior Day is Monday, January 20 and one historic location on Michigan State's campus is gearing up for it own local history in the making.

From artistically symbolic quilts, to storied wall murals, the MSU museum is ready to showcase a special series of civil and human rights exhibits.

It's being unveiled for MLK Day and Paullette Granberry Russell is one of the driving forces behind it. It's called Project 60/50 and it celebrates the 60th anniversary of Brown vs. Board of Education and the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights Act.

"Use Project 60/50 as not only an opportunity to talk about the past, the present but also about how we can address these issues in the future," said Russell, with the MSU office of Inclusion and Intercultural initiatives.

For the museum's future, Mary Worrall, the curator of cultural heritage, hopes the public appreciates the direction she and her team are moving in for 2014, starting here with MLK Day.

"We can connect to people and teach people and share information and these exhibits have components that are so meaningful to people's lives," said Worrall.

"Our exhibits will be here for months to come so people can get a chance to come back and spend a little bit more time in our gallery. There's a lot of energy and excitement leading up to it," said Museum Director Lora Helou.

It's open to anyone and everyone, focusing on why we all need to tell each other something good from time to time. All the exhibits in Project 60/50 open inside the MSU Museum on Monday at 9a.m. and is free.
