Lawmakers Slam BWL For Ice Storm Response

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - The Lansing Board of Water and Light came in for more criticism Tuesday as utility officials testified before a House committee on how they handled the pre-Christmas ice storm.

Board of Water and Light Executive Peter Lark was no where to be found in the committee room where lawmakers took turns taking berating the man who did show up--utilities executive director, George Stojic. He outlined what would be done in the future, given the strong criticism from utility customers who found BWL's performance lacking.

"We have learned a lot through this process," said Stojic.

While the ice storm damage has been cleaned up, some lawmakers feel the BWL has some internal cleaning up to do, as well.

"It's a rather under whelming dirth of substance to this list," said Rep. Mike Shirkey. "Not very inspiring."

"I'm completely appalled. You failed your customers and I think you've got a lot of work to do," said Rep. Henry Yanez.

One lawmaker recounted that a hot utlitiy line remained exposed on the road for six days. "They got a bill in the mail while they were without power. This is just totally unacceptable," said Rep. Brad Jacobsen.

"We are doing a very detailed comprehensive review that will determine how we acted the way we did, what we did wrong, what we did right and come up with a much more detailed plan," said Stojic.

The committee chair was not impressed either.

"BWL and their communications department failed," said Rep. Aric Nesbitt, the energy committee chair. "When 40 percent of our customers are without power, it is not a good thing."

After the hearing, Stojic promised to talk with reporters, but left the room instead and never came back.
