No Money For Plaza Could Mean No New Bridge To Canada

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Washington has refused to pay for a U.S. Customs Plaza to process vehicles for the proposed new bridge between Detroit and Canada. That breaks down as "no plaza, no bridge."

The state transportation director reports Washington has not allocated the money for the plaza. The president has put the dollars in the budget, but somehow, the Congress has not sent the money along.

"This is a major piece moving forward. It's central and is going to slow it down," said Kurt Steudle, MDOT director. "It's an issue that's got to be resolved soon."

In the meantime, the governor is concerned. Steudle concedes the state could pay for this, but Washington should pay for federal projects, not the state. So the lack of federal bucks is a potential deal breaker.
