Committee Review Team Will Focus On Outage, Response And Recovery

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - The team set up to review Lansing Board of Water and Light's handling of the December outages is getting right to work. The all volunteer panel met early Thursday morning to discuss some keys to focus on.

Committee leader Mike McDaniel says he's going to make every second count. "With every crisis there's an opportunity," McDaniel said.

An opportunity for this review team to figure out where Board of Water and Light made mistakes and how they think the utility should fix them.

"Did they train their employees, was their emergency plan up to date," McDaniel said.

McDaniel and the board says that starts with asking the company a series of questions and finding the facts.

"If the board had better situational awareness in terms of the number of customers without power, their response may have been different," one member said. The committee says that includes review everything from communication with customers to the cleanup process.

"What efforts have been made to access and have tree trimming and do we need a different policy relative for tree trimming, " said committee member Bill Long.

Committee member Darnell Earley says their review should even look at how Board of Water and Light operated before the December outages.

"We're talking about a regional utility here and at some point there has probably been some form of review of that and I'd like to see that," Earley said.

The team also plans to compare bwl's response time to other utilities.

It's a complex process that McDaniel says will come from experts and the public's help.

"I think that there will be some suggestions that we haven't heard yet, we haven't considered, we're the community reps, so we want to hear from the community and I know collectively will come up with the right solutions," McDaniel said.

The review teams plans to present those to the public and Board of Water and light March 31st.
