Lansing School Board Decides Against Outsourcing Busing Services, For Now

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The Lansing School District decided Thursday night at a special board meeting it would not outsource busing services to Dean Transportation for the 2014-2015 school year.

Privatization proponents said the plan was slated to save the district more than $5 million over the next five years. However, those against outsourcing said other options, like leasing, will allow the district to save money and keep busing services under its own control.

"I think [the] leasing option is a very viable option for us," said board member Charles Ford. "That way, we don't have to worry about aging buses. After three years, we can turn it over and lease three more buses, ten more buses, at least for three years, five years."

However, Lansing Superintendent Yvonne Caamal Canul said while she supports the board, the conversation on outsourcing is one that will likely resurface this time next year. "Somewhere down the line, we'll have to find some cost savings," she said. "I totally trust Dean Transportation to be a viable provider of transportation, so yeah, we'll probably bring it up again."
