ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WLNS) - There's a new Wolverine In Charge.

The University of Michigan named Dr. Mark Schlissel as the school's 14th president. The board made the unanimous vote at a special meeting on Friday morning.

Schlissel is the provost of Brown University, an ivy league school in Providence, Rhode Island.

"I'm both excited and greatly honored to have been selected to succeed Mary Sue Coleman as the 14th president of the university of michigan," he said, moments after the vote.

Schlissel graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University and has both a medical degree and a doctorate at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

He started teaching a Johns Hopkins in 1991, and moved to the University of California-Berkeley in 1999.

"My motivation as an academic leader stems from a personal belief that understanding and discovery can change the world," said Schlissel.

"I'm thrilled they selected another biochemist," said outgoing president Mary Sue Coleman. She announced her retirement earlier in the year, which will take effect when her contract expires this summer.
