International Students Speak About Snyder's Immigration Plan

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Governor Rick Snyder is expected to participate in a panel in Washington discussing an economic case for passing immigration reform.

Snyder announced Thursday he wants to bring 50,000 immigrants to live and work in Detroit to help boost the population. He's looking to give 5,000 visas in the first year.

Michigan State's officie for international students says this will do positive things for the branding and recruitment of MSU students. Director Peter Briggs says he's proud of Snyder for becoming a leader in this national conversation.

"I think we'd be giving false hope if we thought that we were going to get green cards for everybody that's just not going to happen," said Briggs.

"I can start making plans from here, instead of going back somewhere where i might not have the same connections as i do from here," said Andres Cardoso, an MSU junior from Mexico.
