Athletes Race in Polar Bear 5K

OKEMOS, MICH. (WLNS) -

Athletes braved the weather to run in the snowy conditions today.

The 7th annual polar bear 5k run/walk kicked off at 10 this morning at the Meridian Township Municipal Complex.

Organizers say this is one of the biggest events associated with the Township's 'Winter Family Sports Weekend'.

And its only fitting that it snowed on race day which plays off the name "Polar Bear" Run.

"Its just a cool event because it is in the winter and there's not that many winter races and it adds to the whole thing with the snow coming down," said Greg Grothous, recreation specialist for Meridian Township Parks & Recreation.

Nearly 200 people participated in the race today.
