BWL Customer Gets $82,000 Bill

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - One Lansing Board of Water and Light customer got quite the shock this month when his bill came in.

The Michigan State University law student got a bill issued for over $82,000 and had used over 7 million gallons of water in just five days. To put that into perspective, an Olympic sized swimming pool is 660,000 gallons of water, so the bill would have covered the water in more than 10 pools.

"I just moved my stuff in, I was never there and this is the first bill," said Javaron Buckley. He and his girlfriend, Assa, decided to leave their apartment and move into a home off Shiawassee Street over Christmas break.

"Once I opened it, of course I cursed," he remembers. "Outloud in class and everyone looked back at me."

To top it off, from December 12 through the first of the year, Javaron and Assa weren't even home. They were visiting Assa's family in Germany for the holidays.

He says he contacted the BWL and the utility corrected it immediately.

"They corrected the statement. It was mailed out Friday the 24th," he said.

Luckily, Buckley says his landlord did offer some help if he needed it. "He offered to $564, as long as I made a payment plan with the power company."
