Propane Shortage Grows In MI

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - The cold weather is making the shortage of propane in Michigan worse.

Many people use the gas to heat their homes, and the price per gallon of propane is skyrocketing. This is causing a huge problem for homeowners who depend on it to stay warm in these dangerously cold temperatures below zero.

Officials say the shortage stems from an early start to a very cold winter as well as wet crops in the fall that required large amounts of propane to dry before going into storage.

"We had an unusually wet season in the fall, and we've had to use a lot more propane right in the fall," said Joe Ross, Spokesman at Michigan Propane Gas Association.

The attorney general's office says they've received 87 calls and 43 written complaints as of Thursday afternoon about the prices in the past week.

If you find prices you believe are being gouged, they should call the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division at 1-877-765-8388 or file an online complaint at www.michigan.gov/ag.
