12 Homeless Found Outside During Census Count

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - The cold temperatures didn't keep volunteers from going outside to help get a count how many are homeless in mid-michigan.

The federal government requires the count as part of the annual census of the homeless.

Teams of volunteers gathered at Volunteers of America Wednesday night and braved the frigid temperatures into the wee hours of the night to help with the count. Out of the 12 people they met, they could only convince five to come back for warmth.

The director of community engagement welcomes people who are still on the streets to come and take shelter back at the VOA.

"We're going to help anyone who's still out there in this terrible cold winter. That we let them know there's a place for them to come in, and get out of the cold and get them some help and get a helping hand," said Darin Estep, with the VOA.

Volunteers also gave out survival kits for those who decided to not go back to the VOA. The count included people who are sheltered and/or are seeking refuge under bridges or makeshift camps.
