Groundhog Day: Woody Predicts 6 More Weeks of Winter

Posted: Updated:

HOWELL, Mich. (WLNS) -- Woody the Woodchuck predicts six more weeks of winter for mid-Michigan.

Sunday morning at the Howell Conference & Nature Center nearly 200 people gathered to watch Woody make her annual forecast.

If Woody stays inside her house or comes out for less than 30 seconds, it means Michigan will have six more weeks of winter. If Woody comes out of her house for more than 30 seconds, spring is around the corner.

This year, Woody didn't leave her house at all, meaning more long-lasting bitter cold temperatures and snow.

Center director Dana DeBenham said Woody has been right 11 of 15 times since 1999.

Woody wasn't the only one who saw her shadow Sunday. Punxsutawney Phil of Pennsylvania predicts a long winter, too.
