Shelby Miller Interviews American Idol Contestant Shelby Miller

Posted: Updated:

PORTLAND, Mich. (WLNS) - As a reporter, I tell many stories, but none have hit quite as close to home as this, as I, Shelby Miller, bring you the story of Shelby Miller.

"My name is Shelby Miller. I'm from Portland, MI and I decided to try out for American Idol to pursue a dream I've had since I was little."

From the beginning, Shelby Miller knew she loved to sing. Now, that voice is getting her noticed and recently impressed some of the toughest judges on TV.

"I started out with wasted by Carrie Underwood," Shelby said. "Keith Urban stopped me and he's like, I could listen to you all day, and I'm up there shaking like, I could listen to you all day, too."

Shelby missed the Detroit auditions, so her and her family traveled to Atlanta to meet the judges. However, auditions in July meant the Portland Saint Patrick junior kept a big secret for months.

"I told everybody that I'd originally auditioned, but that's as far as I could tell them until they saw me with the golden ticket and I could finally say, alright, this is why I've been missing school," Shelby said.

Once the secret was out, Shelby came to school to find dozens of signs hung by Saint Patrick staff to celebrate Shelby getting the golden ticket and heading to Hollywood.

Shelby credits her success on her hometown support, her family and her faith.

"I think a big part of this journey has been my faith," Shelby said. "I started out and was kind of just wanting to go into it for the experience, but then as I went further and got the golden ticket I really started to think, this could be life changing for me."

It's a journey that's just beginning for this small town girl, as she takes the spotlight in Hollywood.

American Idol's Hollywood week starts on Wednesday.
