BWL's GM Doesn't Have Emails Requested From Review Team

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - The Lansing Board of Water and Light community review team issued its first request for documents about the ice storms before Christmas. One of the things they want is communications records with city officials, but BWL Spokesperson Steve Serkaian says the emails were deleted and are too far back to retain.

According to Vice Chair of the board of commissioners, Dennis Louney, General Manager Peter Lark has always deleted his email at the end of every day, even before working for BWL.

"That's his policy. I think in general as a public utility, it makes sense to have some sort of back-up in case we need to find that information," said Louney.

He isn't sure if there's anything secretive in the emails, but says they do need to follow up with the recent request to see them. "I think if the emails are available, we should do everything in our power to find them from the back-ups."

Lansing City Council president at the time, Carol Wood, says she didn't delete any emails with BWLl officials during the ice storm. "It was important for me to keep these as a record as we move forward."

"You have people making assumptions about something that happened, that might not have happened," said T.J. Bucholz, spokesman for the BWL community review team. He says they're asking for documents about everything that happened during the ice storm, including emails.

Bucholz says if BWL refuses to give something up, "it certainly would prevent us from casting a full light on what happened" and that would be reflected in their report.
