Michigan House OKs Sentencing Rules For Young Killers

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan House has voted to create new sentencing rules for young killers after the nation's high court struck down mandatory life imprisonment for juveniles.

The 62-48 votes Tuesday comes about three months after the Senate approved the legislation. The bill would apply only to future cases and not retroactively to 360 or so Michigan inmates who were under 18 when they committed their crimes.

The measure includes a "trigger" that says the prisoners should be resentenced if the U.S. Supreme Court or Michigan Supreme Court says so.

Legislators are divided over whether inmates sentenced as juveniles should have a chance at parole. The legislation is now likely to move on to Gov. Rick Snyder, assuming the Senate OKs House changes.
