New Development Near Airport Brings Jobs, Area 'Face Lift'

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Mayor Virg Bernero is planning to create 25 or more jobs near Lansing's Capital Area Region International Airport and Peckham on Grand River Avenue.

Bernero announced a $7 million, 80,000-square foot project that will begin in a few months. Demolition of current buildings in the area is expected to start in the spring. Construction will begin within the next two years.

"We have an aggressive plan and a use of economic incentives to turn abandoned properties just like this that will create jobs and taxes," said Mayor Bernero.

The project will include two buildings for retail space for shops and restaurants. There will also be a warehouse and office space for small businesses.

This location was chosen because people coming into and out of the airport can see the area and it was in need of a "face lift."

"It's a gateway property when people come here from other cities and they land at our airport and theyre downtown this is one of the first propertties theyre going to see," said Karl Dorshimer, the Director of Economic Development with LEAP.

The building has been vacant for 10 years or more and has mold and asbestos. It's expected to be finished by spring of 2016.
