President Obama To Sign Farm Bill At MSU Today

Posted: Updated:

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) - Mid-Michigan is ready for the arrival of our President.

President Obama will be flying into Lansing this afternoon to sign the massive farm bill passed by congress earlier this week.

We found out last week, he was headed our way. A lot of people are looking forward the President's visit.

But the President has more on his plate than just the farm bill.

President Barack Obama will not only sign the nearly $100 billion per year farm bill into law this afternoon, but he also plans to announce the launching of a new program titled "Made in Rural America" to help American farmers and rural businesses boost their exports.

The new initiative will set policy for agricultural programs and though it'll make some cuts to the food stamp program, lawmakers in the house argue it will help the 47 million recipients of food stamps while allowing farmers to keep their subsidies.

The new administration program will connect rural businesses with federal resources that can help sell their products and services abroad.

The creation of the program comes as US farmers are sending more products overseas, a record 141 billion dollars last year. US officials say even more opportunities exist overseas for farmers and other rural business owners.

"This opens up a whole new vista of economic opportunity that has not existed before. And this farm bill makes an historic investment in both of those things. And so I'm excited about that," said Tom Vilsack, Secretary of Agriculture.

The event is closed to the public, but 6 News will have complete team coverage of his stay. You can watch his speech live on-air and streaming on

President Obama is expected to begin his speech on Friday around 2 p.m.
