Prisoner Had Near-Miss With Guard During Escape

Posted: Updated:

IONIA, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a convicted killer captured in Indiana after a daring one-day escape from a Michigan prison was within 20 feet of a guard on a perimeter vehicle patrol before getting away unnoticed.

The Grand Rapids Press also reports officers assigned to monitor surveillance video failed to see Michael David Elliot during Sunday's escape.

Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan says video shows Elliot leaving his housing unit, going to an area that's off-limits to prisoners and then going through perimeter fences.

Elliot was arrested Monday in a stolen vehicle in northwestern Indiana, about 24 hours after fleeing prison. He has refused to waive extradition and is being held in Indiana on a $1 million bond.

Corrections officials expect to wrap up their internal investigation next week. House Democratic Leader Tim Greimel and Rep. Collene Lamonte are calling for an independent review into the escape. More on that is expected on Monday.
