Snyder: Obama Signing Bill In Michigan An Honor

Posted: Updated:

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder says he's honored that President Barack Obama has chosen to sign the sweeping farm bill in Michigan State University and says it recognizes the state's strength in agriculture production and innovation.

The Republican governor said in a statement Friday that the nearly $100 billion-a-year federal bill passed after two and a half years of legislative wrangling provides "certainty for one our most vital industry sectors." Agriculture is Michigan's second-largest industry behind manufacturing.

Obama plans to sign the bill in the afternoon at the East Lansing campus. He first planned to have lunch with Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

Snyder was speaking Friday in Detroit about the economy and his 2-day-old budget proposal with business leaders. He was sending his director of agriculture and rural development to the bill signing.
